As a dynamic group of young professionals, we are in a unique position of being able to share our 'professional' skills with people in our community who could most benefit. The skills we take for granted - such as writing a resume, filling out an application form, writing a cover letter and going to an interview - are extremely hard tasks for some people, especially those without steady employment or a higher education.
SCYP Mentors pairs young professionals with members of our community who are looking to build these job seeking skills and was developed by SCYP Outreach Directors, Nikki Shariat and Wendy Vinhage.
SCYP Mentors is a five-week course, 2hrs each week. We share tips on how to write resumes and cover letters. Each mentor-mentor pair works together to develop these materials. We finish the program with a mock interview which helps set up the mentees for 'a real world' interview.
The program has been run twice, first with clients from Housing Transitions and second with clients from the Youth Services Bureau. We have had mentees from both session be placed in jobs!
