Sips is a chance for you to meet new people, catch up with friends, and learn about upcoming SCYP events. Group appetizers will be provided to be shared using your entry fees/membership dues. Not a member? Just want to join us for a night? Stop on by! Non-members may attend Sips for $8. SCYP Volunteer: AAUW Annual Book Sale

Join us to help set up for one of State College’s biggest events of the year! The AAUW is seeking volunteers for their annual book sale. Come on out to help unload books and set up for the weekend sale. 

The best part? Volunteers get first pick of the books donated (can purchase at end of shift), and AAUW will provide a free boxed dinner. If you have never experienced the book sale, now is your chance to give back and see what all the hype is about!

Proceeds from the AAUW Book Sale fund grants to support projects of Centre County non-profits that align with AAUW’s mission and scholarships awarded to women adult learner undergraduate students residing in Centre County. The sale also supports national AAUW initiatives, STEM programs in Centre County, and branch programs.

SCYP Volunteer: Spring Creek Park Cleanup Day

Enjoy a weekend day outside with a good deed by helping keep Spring Creek Park one of the best parks in the area at our spring clean-up! Volunteers will help by picking up litter, maintaining planting beds and walkways, trail cleanup, and many more activities supervised by the Centre Region Parks & Recreation (CRPR) staff. SCYP is an official Park Partner through CRPR.

Help your community out, spruce up the park, enjoy nature, and hang out with some other SCYP members! Non-members are encouraged to participate.

**We will meet in the MAIN parking lot area accessed from the entrance off Houserville Road.

**Be sure to bring water and work/gardening gloves. We have a few pairs of gloves we can lend to volunteers. Please wear a SCYP shirt if you have one to help represent SCYP as we work to make the park beautiful! If you don’t have a t-shirt, we’ll be giving out legacy SCYP T-shirts to volunteers (sizing is limited).

After the event, some of the group usually heads to a local spot for lunch!

Union Cemetery Tour

Join the State College Young Professionals (SCYP) for a tour of historic Union Cemetery in Bellefonte. This is a public event (which SCYP will be attending) for Bellefonte Civil War Weekend. While the tour begins at 6pm, please arrive at the Cemetery by 5:45pm. SCYP attendees are encouraged to travel early to find parking in downtown Bellefonte and walk to the Cemetery.

“Union Cemetery in Bellefonte is one of the oldest cemeteries in Centre County and the resting place of many of the countyโ€™s early notable leaders.”

“The 2026 Union Cemetery tour during Bellefonteโ€™s Civil War weekend will include about a dozen of the Civil War soldiers buried on its grounds. The only repeats from last yearโ€™s tour will be Governor Andrew G. Curtin, General James A. Beaver and Medal of Honor recipient George W. Harris. The tour will last about one hour and will be the same each day of the weekend. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather as we will go rain or shine. If the weather is very hot, please bring your own water and stay hydrated.”

Tour guide bio: “W. Charles Young (Chuck) received his B.S. in Secondary Education and B.A. and M.A. in History from The Pennsylvania State University. He is also certified by LaSalle University to teach Advanced Placement U.S. Government and Politics. He spent 35 years in public education as a teacher, building administrator, and District superintendent. He has had a lifelong passion for local history and military history, particularly the American Civil War. He has been active since his early twenties with several community historical groups. He was a founding member of the Central Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable, a life member of the Roland Curtin Foundation, a former member of the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association, and a former board member of the Bellefonte Cemetery Association. He is also a member of The American Battlefield Trust, The Central Virginia Battlefield Trust, and the Antietam Institute. He has been published in the Instituteโ€™s Antietam Journal and BHCAโ€™s The Bell. He is currently researching several topics for further publication.”

SCYP Semi-Annual Membership Meeting

State College Young Professionals is holding our semi-annual members meeting on the evening of Wednesday May 13. This is your chance as a member (or interested guest) to see what we discuss at our meeting, share feedback about SCYP’s events and happenings, and to give the opportunity for interested members to join the board. 

The board is looking for additional members in the following roles: Communications Co-Director, Secretary, Social Experience Co-Director, Sports & Recreation Co-Director, and Volunteer Co-Director. If any of these interest you, contact us and plan to attend this meeting.

Weather permitting, we will meet at one of the pavilions on the north side of the park. If rain is in the forecast, an indoor location will be announced within the week ahead of the meeting. Pizza will be available if we meet at the park.

SCYP Volunteer: YMCA Anti-Hunger School Backpack Packing

Come join us in helping pack backpacks for local students in need! We will join a group of Penn State students on campus for their regular Tuesday packing event. The event end time is variable depending on the number of volunteers as we have a goal number of backpacks to pack, but is often less than 2 hours.

Centre County YMCA’s Anti-Hunger School Backpack Program distributes over 1,500 backpacks each week to our county’s public schools. Local students enrolled in theย Backpack Program receive a backpack each Friday (or final day of the week) during the school year to ensure students have enough food to eat over the weekend. Each backpack contains breakfast,ย lunch,ย dinner, and a snack for Saturday and Sunday. You can learn more about the Anti-Hunger programย here.ย

Nuclear Reactor Tour

What does a working nuclear reactor actually look like up close?  SCYP is hosting a private tour of Penn Stateโ€™s Breazeale Nuclear Reactor on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:00 PM โ€” one of the longest-operating university research reactors in the United States.  Get an up-close look at cutting-edge nuclear research, learn how reactor technology works, and hear from the experts who keep it running.
